Research and effectiveness
Medical silicones such as dimethicone are commonly used in formulations for scar therapy. Their properties allow them to form barriers on the skin, which promotes hydration and reduces the sensation of dryness at the scar site. Studies show that regular use of silicone formulations promotes healing and improves the appearance of scars. Silicones work by reducing transepidermal water loss (TEWL), which contributes to maintaining optimal conditions for tissue regeneration. Maintaining hydration accelerates healing and helps to reduce the appearance of scars by smoothing the skin and improving its texture. Studies suggest that patients using silicones sometimes see a reduction in the visibility of scars by 30-70% compared to a control group after a certain period of use (e.g. 12 to 24 weeks). Silicones are used in the treatment of both acne, post-surgical and traumatic scars. These preparations can be used in the form of gels, ointments or silicone flakes.
